The BMBS has cancelled all events at the Carnaby site until further notice although they have not prevented individuals from attending.

This means that the first NADs race on 5th April has been cancelled.

Racing will resume as soon as we are permitted.

I will keep everyone updated with any changes.

    Regards
    Martin Marriott
    NADs Chairman

I have added what should be the last diagram to my original post in this topic. It shows the course as it would be if it was laid out as per the markings on the lake side. These were kindly taken by Ian Phillips and George Roberts recently, so thanks for doing that in “brass monkey” weather. You will notice that’s this layout has 9mt clearance from the bank sides.

The peripheral length of this circuit is 173.59mts.

One puzzle is if you compare this circuit to the one taken from the Google Maps ariel view (which I am told by David Harvey is from the 2018 Nationals), you will see that they are rather different. I can’t explain this.

In order to make it easier to picture the options as compared to the existing buoy locations, I have added some extra diagrams to my original post.
One diagram is the dimensions that are taken directly from the Google Maps image I linked to in my first post. I believe the Google dimensions to be extremely accurate but I have to note that these differ significantly from the dimensions that Ian sent to David Harvey (See David’s last post). One explanation is that the buoys have moved since the Google picture was taken. From the image you can see that there is the crawler track in place but no buggy track. Ian will undoubtedly be able to accurately date this and to confirm if the buoys have moved since then.
I have also added a diagram showing what a course with the same peripheral distance as a Naviga course, but with a 12mt separation from the banks, is like.
Also I have added an image with a 10mt clearance circuit superimposed upon the Google image and also another with the 12mt clearance circuit superimposed. This should make the options very clear.
You will notice that the 12mt separation circuit has quite short straights.
I have hopefully given you sufficient information to make a decision. The choices you can now discuss / vote on are:-
    • 9mt clearance
    • 9.5mt clearance
    • 10mt clearance
    • 12mt clearance
    • Leave it as it is
    • Other
I look forward to seeing a health discussion.

Yes so I understand. My question was rather, if the buoy becomes detached from the rope, is there anything to stop the rope being pulled back through the loop. If there is then you can just follow the rope from the bank to the loop but if not then finding the loop would be very tricky.

A number of people have asked me how far the outer buoys are from the banks and so rather than answer individually I will send my answer to all.
It’s difficult to say what the clearance is now because since the “automatic” raising and lowering started to give problems they are often put out manually each meeting and so it’s variable.
Also, it isn’t put out with any measurement.
I suggest that you look on Google Maps https://www.google.com/maps/@54.0602202,-0.2521186,147m/data=!3m1!1e3 and use the “Measure Distance” feature. You will see that on the particular day that the satellite photo was taken, the outer buoys were about 13mts from the bank.
You will also notice that the circuit doesn’t have semicircle ends. It is more like a rectangle with bulgy ends.
It seems to me that the questions we need to ask ourselves are:-
    • Is it desirable to have the circuit length the same as a Naviga circuit?
    • Is it desirable that the ends of the circuit are semi-circular?
If the answer to both those questions is yes then you will see the results in the diagrams I sent to you. The further away the outer buoys are from the bank, the more that the straights are shortened. In fact, if the clearance from the bank were 13mts then the semicircle radius is 18mts and the straights would be only 27mts long and the circuit becomes closer to a circle.
From the responses I have had so far, it would appear that the younger ones with better eyesight want a smaller clearance with longer straights with the opposite also being true.

    Hi Ian,
    Thanks for the feedback.

As we have recently been putting out the buoys (well Andrew has) in seemingly random locations with people from the pontoon shouting left a bit, right a bit; I can only assume that we haven’t been using the block and loops. That raises the question in my head as to how we would locate the blocks again if the buoy has become detached and the rope has pulled back through the loop.

    Martin
